Little Bits of Happiness
I spent the morning helping in my son’s kindergarten class. I really enjoy this, which I do about once a month. It is so much fun to observe him in situations that I do not normally see him in. Amidst the chatter of 29 little voices I heard him say to a friend, “I swear I have a Leapster! I have a Wall-E game and Star Wars…I swear!” I looked over just as he was giving his friend a pinkie shake (I guess this is the way that kindergartners show that they’re swearing the truth). I have never heard him use this expression before, or seen him do the pinkie shake thing. It was really cute and it made me happy seeing him be cute with his little friends.
Kiddos #2 and #3 were at a friend’s house while I was helping at the school. When I picked them up my friend gave them little suckers to take home. Kiddo #2 had two, and voluntarily gave one to his older brother who was waiting in the car. I didn’t realize he had done this until #1 exclaimed,
“Mommy, he did service! He served the Lord! He gave me one of his suckers!”
We teach the kids that when they serve others, they are serving God (Mosiah 2:17); I am thrilled that it’s sinking in.
I came into the den to write this post and #1 predictably followed me in. “Hey, why don’t you go out and play?” I asked.
“Because I like to hang out with you,” he said. “Because I love you so much.”
After watching other people’s kids, as well as my own, on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, I am looking forward to an afternoon full of (somewhat) peace and quiet. I think I’m going to bake some fresh bread. That always makes me happy.
